This is allegory/fiction and some of the tales are very heart touching and insightful. Kids really like the stories and have lots of questions about it. Overall the stories derive from a Christian worldview but present those tenants in startling yet meaningful ways. For example, the high king is a beggar. A dirty girl living with pigs and hating everyone is the sinner who needs a savior. If you are reading this series with your kids, PLEASE get the parent book – its a must. It contains questions to ask for each short story and frankly helped me know what the purpose of the each tale was – what it was supposed to teach or reveal about Christianity and God. We enjoyed going through these books with my 7 and 8 year olds. Some side things I gleaned along the way while reading the book. I think Caretaker, the King, and Mercie are all representations of the trinity (Father, son, and Holy Spirit). Also, the reason why the king walks upside down on his hands from time to time, is because Jesus in many ways flipped society on its head. The more I read this allegory, the more I glean from it. I think the author did a really great job. My son is fully engaged.

These are my favorite children’s/youth books teaching about the Lord Jesus and HIs Kingdom ways. They stayed with my daughter throughout her life and now we are buying them for her children. Fabulous new illustrations in this new updated version. Love Karen and David Mains — such thoughtful and insightful writers from the Evangelical tradition.

As a purchaser for a Church Children’s Library, these are wonderful! The analogy is exceptionally good for how the Kingdom of God has interplay with this present world.Adults will love the humor of a “news commentator” that changes his story mid-report, since he cannot decide what is true!Children will love the adventure of dragons and Rangers who protect the Kingdom forests. It is well written and beautifully illustrated.Well done!!

I discovered this collection in the early 90’s and bought the 1st book, but could never find copies of books two and three. I was thrilled to see this re-release with new original art. These books are beautiful and wonderful addition to any library. The stories are so well done and deal with many issues of faith and growing up. I would rank these only behind C.S. Lewis Narnia books as an addition for a Christian family’s library.Pick these up today, you won’t regret it!

We read these books aloud to our children back in the 20th century! Rediscovered them as grandparents– when one of our sons asked if we still had them. We had given away the first set, and so we bought them again. What a joy! Liking meeting with an old friend. We also noticed that there is a revision available, with new illustrations with more racial diversity, and we bought those too hoping that the quality of the text had not been “revised”. To our relief the text is preserved intact, and the new illustrator has done a great job, portraying the contrast of the Kingdom with the dystopian world even better than the original edition.

These stories captured my kids’ attention (6,8,11) as they asked for more chapters each time we read. They also lead to great discussions about Biblical truth, and how good the King is, and what character they most associate with. Loved both the story telling and deeper heart message. These will be on my gift giving list.

Some of the passages were a bit awkward, but these tales are so encouraging to the heart. It’s obvious the authors know the Heart of Christ and it was a refreshment, a balm, and an illumination to my own heart to read their creative way of depicting our King and the kingdoms of this world. The Gospel really shines in this series. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to draw near to the heart of God or get a refreshing burst of the Good News!

Purchased these for my daughter, aged 6, who was loved to read through them at bedtime. The stories are well written and the illustrations and books are nicely done. I am enjoying the updated versions and the messages are as timeless as ever. Truly worth adding to any young Christian’s library
