Wonderful story that elicited a great deal of conversation.

Tales of the Kingdom by David and Karen Mains is a tremendous allegory of the reality of the kingdom of Light and the Kingdom of Darkness. Written a decade before the movies for Lord of The Rings, this triology is a great depiction for young and old believers in Christ to see and experience, from story telling, some of the secrets of the Bible details of these kingdoms. Highly recommend for families to use to read together as bed time stories. Buy all three books, you will be blessed.

As a child, this book opened my eyes and made me dream. As an adult, it brought tears to my eyes as I remembered all those great joys and lessons I forgot. This is a children’s book with pictures and large print. It follows the story of Hero, a young teen who is scarred, rejected, and alone. Throughout the book Hero and those surrounding him learn various lessons about life which both children and adults today can learn from. The messages are clear – Jesus loves His little children, and will rescue them from evil and teach them how to be the best they can be. He can heal their wounds and sees through secrets. And each one of us can be a Hero for Christ.Of course, this book is an allegory and can provide a starting point for discussion for those too young to understand the true meaning behind it. The beginning of the first chapter is a bit hard to get through with some unfamiliar terminology, but if you can get to the end of the first chapter, you can see why and it’s smooth sailing from there. It’s a chapter book. Each chapter is a separate story, but the characters are woven together throughout.Honestly I would recommend and even buy this book for every single person I know with kids, especially ages 4 to 10. Unfortunately the book is out of print, hard to find, and expensive. But it’s worth the price, I promise!

I had the opportunity to read a children’s book, Tales of the Kingdom by David and Karen Mains. It is a fascinating tale with a scarred young teen protagonist, thus his name of Scar, who must escape a horrendous situation only to find a welcoming kingdom of refuge. It smacks of a Narnia-like existence where characters are easily seen as Christian symbols. In fact with the magical transformation of some of the characters and the ever watchful presence of their benefactor, a parallel to John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress can be drawn as well.Older elementary or middle school children should be able to identify with the quest of this young man, his fears, and his apprehensions in this new place. With his scars, he does not think he is anything special as most young people feel their inadequacies. It would be a nice read for discussions about how to cope with our ever-changing world and youngster’s feelings when they approach the unfamiliar, or a pretty girl, or a king.I’d recommend this book for a young book club, reading circle, or a family. That way Christian connections could be brought to light as well as real world applications of the story dilemmas.Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of the book by the publisher for review.

This book is a beautiful allegory of the kingdom of heaven. My 7 and 9 year old grandchildren loved it as much as I did!!!! A wonderful story woven with a heavenly meaning. One minute i would laugh, then cry, and then shout hallelujah!!!! I highly recommend. This wonderful book!!!! I will never get rid of my copy!

I have loved this series since I was young. The stories are fun and exciting and are not overly “preachy”. I love the Christian message, but to be honest, never saw the connection when I was younger. To me it was always a good story. Now that I am older I have purchased several copies of the whole series for my own family and also some friends. I think it is a great way to reinforce the story of Christ without making it feel like a bible lesson. Younger children will love the stories and older ones will understand the correlation between them and bible stories. I highly recommend this for any child’s library.

I read book #2 before this one in the trilogy. I thought I would have an advantage…but no I didn’t.This allegory is very touching. The introduction to the characters of the Trilogy is breathtaking. So much similarity in these characters and the lives of the real world is so astonishing. [I know it’s an allegory, but done so well. I believed them to be true]There are twelve stories in this tale. Each ending with some moral truth. Could these be stages one goes through in this adventure called life?I loved these tales. I truly believe in the messages presented through each short story. I am one who likes to read/discover little nuggets of truths hidden in the story-telling.This book of tales is well done. The imagery is beyond appealing. The word pictures were very descriptive….I was there…I saw it for myself. I became part of these tales and I accept the knowledge presented in each story. Will I or do I walk in this wisdom?I have the last book of the trilogy to read…Gonna start today.Highly recommend this book for children of all ages, and it’s not only for the christian community to read.

We have not ordered second hand books before so we were impressed with the ease of the ordering process through Amazon…a name we could trust. The delivery was very prompt and on time for us to send the book on to our daughter. So we very much wanted a decent copy. The cost of this copy was more than acceptable. The reading material was in very good condition but the cover could have been a little nicer. We knew we would be taking a chance…….buying sight unseen. However, over all we, as well as our daughter, were very pleased with the whole process and would order again.

I enjoyed this book as much as my 7 yo who always wanted me to read more. The names or lack of names of the characters and some of their eccentricities made me wonder at the beginning but soon was won over by how the story touched my heart and it all came together so beautifully.
Catriona Bryan –
A beautiful allegory masterfully woven together and inspired by The One Who Always Is. You will laugh, you will cry, and most of all you will learn to love the King and see oneself through His eyes.

Read this back in Middle school and needed my own copy. This is an absolutely beautiful edition of this book. It was updated to go without a dust jacket this time around, so it will be easier to keep in one piece. It’s the pictures for each story within that I was concerned about, but they are flawless in the reprint. If you like wholesome family-friendly stories with a moral, I highly suggest these Tales of the Kingdom.

it is my favourite Christian children’s series. it speaks far beyond a children’s story for each Christian must seek after God with child like hope and faith in the Father God who created them with a special purpose. unfortunately sin and hurt and confusion and many problems complicate the truth and strength of God’s plan, hope and love. these stories illustrate the real issues we each face, but in a way far enough removed from our own struggles to let one truly identify with the truth that might not be so easy to see if one was called on the carpet to account for an error.there are some simple phrases used through the story that clearly and simply convey the motif of evil vs good. for example the evil one says, “seeing is believing.” The returning king knows better that, “believing is seeing.” how many times as Christians due we fear because we believe what we see instead of know in Faith that God will get us through the good and the bad. it is in Faith that we please God. well, I can say that I please God more because of this book. I more clearly see, hear, understand how to apply the Bible to my life, actions, view, faith because of this children’s book. for those of you that might wonder why an adult gets so much from a children’s book….maybe the history of children’s literature might help. the original children’s books were meant for adults, not children. this is an excellent example of great writing.there is only one negative aspect I have with this electronic, kindle book. the pictures are too small to fully appreciate. the paper book has big, full page pictures. You only get one picture per story, but in the paper book it is big. the artist’s details and investment in the story are truly communicated. I don’t get as much from the story these micro illustrations. the kindle version is still a great buy. you can’t go wrong with any version of there works by David and Karen Mains.I love Aesop’s fables. at the end of each story their is a moral to draw. so it is with tales of the kingdom. a good place to consider or meditate or think on throughout the day. I recommend reading these with an open heart and a prayer. “May God let me consider myself as the character in this story. Is there anything that I can draw from there faults and foibles and victories or traits that would help me to be better at being me.” ENJOY! The kingdom trilogy is great.

I was satisfied enough by this, with the new multicultural pictures to get two more copies so that all of my children will have one someday to read to their grandchildren. Is that enough recommendation? These books were a favorite for my children, and I greatly enjoyed reading them to them. Not for the very youngest kids.

Excellent Story. Good for all ages!

This Trilogy has been one of our family favorites for years. We read the entire series aloud and have re-read portions many times. We’ve enjoyed the stories, the characters, and the symbolism in the books. Our daughter has her own set to read to her kids . . . when she has them someday!

I read this as a kid and now decades later as an adult. Good each time. A good read aloud too.

Incredible book! Wonderful for children and adults. It’s a delightful read aloud book; multiple readings open up more and more appreciation of this tale.
Bernard Parham 2 –
This book and its sequel were read during my teens. The trilogy has a wonderful set of allegories which can be used to discuss the importance of roles within families, communities, society, and religion.

My children and I used to listen to these moral tales, it is so nice to see them in print again! Lessons that I needed to be reminded of, even in my 60’s!
Devon –
For an adult reading these to a kid these stories are alright however they are jumbled up and cluttered a bit. This doesn’t mean kids won’t like them, kids aren’t as critical as adults and will accept the book as it is. They are indeed classics, when I was little they were read to me, but I didn’t notice the confusion because I didn’t question everything back then.
Joan A. Sonnenburg –
This is a great book filled with stories of a loving King and and lessons applicable for all. I recommend it for all ages.
JDN –
Tales of the Kingdom, book one of a trilogy, is a lovely account in allegory form of many truths that we need daily reminders of in our lives. It is a quest for truth and to find the King. There is the villain, called the Enchanter, who rules over Enchanted City with an iron fist; and the underground taxi service that seems to always know what the villain and his henchmen are up to and always knows if there has been a sighting of the King. There is the safe place, Great Park, at the other side of the dreaded garbage dump, where orphans can escape to if they are fortunate enough to know about it, or maybe, a taxi might take them there. The young hero in the story is Scarboy, an orphan, who escapes through the garbage dump with his little brother to try and find the King his mother secretly told him about before her death. It is a collection of sequential short stories, lauding love and caring, exposing greed and fraud, lies and wickedness, bit by bit attempting to break down the Enchanter’s stronghold. The other two books are Tales of the Resistance and Tales of the Restoration. The art work in the original books is outstanding and adds visual beauty to an already beautiful story. I highly recommend this book, which leaves you thinking for a lifetime.
Diane Blumert –
Great book with great pictures for the great stories.
Sara Beth Upshaw –
I am having such a wonderful time reading this to my girls at bedtime. This book series is great for so many reasons. I love that it is one continuous storyline with developing characters but each chapter has a beginning, middle and end that leaves them satisfied as a bedtime story. And each chapter has it’s own moral so it’s great to be able to reference particular stories and their metaphors as we are doing life. I have been moved to tears on more than one occasion because of the truth found in the metaphor and the moving way they are communicated. I LOVE THIS SERIES! I would recommend it to everyone and especially to parents. It’s a marvelous way to augment Biblical teaching.
Craig Rutan –
absolutely as i remember it, still have cassetes! the cassetes had bonus material, like reading with out music/fx and showing the difference after they are added, which wasnt on the cds sadly(no missing storyline) I love davids voices!
Britt Dregger –
This book has changed my life! I read it as a child, and again recently as an adult. I am saving it to read with my future children. It’s timeless and exciting, meaningful, and deeply relatable. It’s Biblical and written I believe by those who must have walked out what the Bible teaches, because it relates stories that reveal mysteries: of healing, of the keys to overcoming difficulties, and of becoming strong and loving. Jack Stockholm’s illustrations are throughout and they are well done and even have intricate borders. Totally worth the money!

Initially purchased this book in 1983, my children loved it. In fact my daughter took it to college. She is now a teacher and read the stories to her students at a private Church school. I purchased this book to give as a gift to my minister and his wife who have young children.
